Immunohistochemical Study on the Lysozyme-positive Tumor Cells in Adenocarcinomas of the Stomach and Large Intestine

Abstract
It has been previously shown that lysozyme is localized in cells of the cardiac and pyloric glands of the stomach, in epithelial cells of the Brunner glands of the duodenum and in Paneth cells of the small intestine and large intestine. Moreover, lysozyme were demonstrated by an immunoperoxidase(PAP) technique in malignant cells of adenocarcinoma of the stomach and the large intestine, and were considered to be a marker for malignant Paneth cells.
The objectives of this study were to demonstrate and to compare with an immunoperoxidase (BAS) technique the presence of lysozyme within tumor cells in 14 patients with gastric cancer and 20 patients with colorectal cancer.
The results were as follows.
1. Lysozyme was demonstrated as brown deposits in the cytoplasm of the malignant cells of 6 diffuse type (total 8 cases), and 3 intestinal type (total 6 cases) of gastric cancer. The distribution of lysozyme in neoplastic cells disclosed diffuse pattern in diffuse type and variable pattern with faint appearance in intestinal type of gastric cancer. The different reaction pattern of lysozyme in malignant cells, according to location and cellular differentiation of the gastric cancer, was not observed.
2. In the colorectal cancer, lysozyme was demonstrated in the cytoplasm of malignant cells of 5 adenocarcinoma (total 16 cases) and a signet ring cell carcinoma with focal glandular differentiated area (total 1 case). Mutinous adenocarcinoma (total 3 cases) was negative for lysozyme.
The different reaction pattern of lysozyme in malignant cells, according to invasion of colon cancer, was not seen.
3. The distribution of lysozyme in malignant cells of the gastric cancer was more prevalent than that of colorectal cancer in incidence, number of cells in cancer nests and reactivity.
